The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Holy Day of Obligation Masses

August 13, 2019 1:17 pm

Thursday, August 15th, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast celebrates an important doctrine of the Church:  “The Most Blessed Virgin Mary, when the course of her earthly life was completed, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven, where she already shares in the glory of her Son’s Resurrection, anticipating the resurrection of all members of His body.”  (Catechism of the Catholic Church 974.)  A common misunderstanding is that Mary “ascended” into heaven.  Rather, it is Christ who, by His own power, ascended into heaven; Mary was taken up – assumed – by God into heaven.  Her Assumption reminds us that we are meant not for this world, but for eternity with Our Lord in heaven.

The feast of the Assumption is a Holy Day of Obligation. Our Masses are:

Vigil, Wednesday, August 14th, 7:30 pm (no 6:30 pm Confessions or 7:00 pm Holy Hour);

Thursday, August 15th, 6:30 & 8:30 am, 12:15 & 7:30 pm.
